Primary School

As a primary school teacher you’ll need subject knowledge in the core National Curriculum subjects, starting with maths, literacy and phonics.

There is a particular focus on the use of systematic, synthetic phonics (SSP), and we focus on providing high quality training that enables you to teach phonics and early reading effectively.

Individual Training Plans

At the beginning of your training we work with you to assess your level of confidence and competence against the Teachers’ Standards. With support, you develop your individual training plan that helps you fill gaps in your knowledge and understanding.

Age Range Balance

When you train to be a primary school teacher you will focus on a particular age range within the 3-11 phase.  You will typically train across:

  • the 3-7 age range or
  • the 5-11 age range

Your training programme will cover no fewer than four school years and you will be given the opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of progression across, and before and after, the age range you are training to teach.  Time in at least two schools will ensure that you are fully prepared to teach across your specified age range and you will be assessed by how well your impact as a teacher meets the Teachers’ Standards across this range.
